Elizabeth Gulugulu Machache is an environmentalist by profession, a climate change activist who is very passionate about the issue of food security. She is a young person who is enthusiastic about environmental conservation and food security in Africa. She was one of the young delegates to represent her country at the Conference Of the Parties (COP) 23 in 2017 and COP 25 in 2019. She seeks to give hope and make young people aware of the fact that they are the ones who should take urgent action in the issue of climate change and food security. This is as she says, is due to the fact that time is running out and young people need to take action. She does not only interacts with young people but she also influences decision makers in policy making, bridging the gap between the older generation and the younger generation. The older generation in this case are the different heads of states and representatives, and the younger generations are the ones who partake in activism as she does. In 2015 she obtained her Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science then worked for an organization called Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network CSAYN in 2016 where she had the opportunity to attend the COP 23. Whilst at COP they had a side event supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) which focused on youth participation in the agriculture value chain . In 2018 Elizabeth was nominated to be a part of AquaTrans, a Southern African Development Community (SADC) program which aims at supporting fish farming innovations and
She traveled to Malawi to gain knowledge about fish farming. In 2019 she was the only Zimbabwean chosen to attend and participate in the Youth Climate Summit in New York un the UN Secretary's General's office. That same year Elizabeth was granted a scholarship to attend the Conference Of the Parties 25 in Madrid under the #Youth4NDCs program. This year, 2020, even though there's an outbreak of the corona virus, she still engages with stakeholders, politicians and young people online virtually. Advocating for climate change to her is important because the change in the climate causes droughts and floods which affects food security and people should be good stewards of the environment for it to continuously supply us with food and other valuable resources. Humans are not the only ones affected by climate change but also the planet itself gets affected, she said. She encourages young people to play their part in the fight against climate change by doing the little that they can to reduce their carbon footprint. Elizabeth says, "we can not talk about food security without talking about a sustainable environment" and she goes on to say that these issues are interlinked. A sustainable environment will be able to cater for the demand of food and therefore there will be no food shortages but an environment that is not sustainable will lead to food shortages and the environment will not be able to cater for the human race. When Climate Change occurs it causes floods which destroys infrastructure even crops are destroyed contributing to a shortage of food for people and feed for animals. Elizabeth Gulugulu says she has grasped a lot of knowledge in her journey and now understands the need to be consistent whilst coming up with sustainable solutions to environmental issues and food security.
